Kevin McCarthy is an American politician who
served as the 55th speaker of the United States House of Representatives from
January to October 2023. A member of the Republican Party, he currently represents California's 20th congressional district, which encompasses most of the San Joaquin Valley.
McCarthy was born in Bakersfield, California, and graduated from California State University, Bakersfield. He served as a member of the California State Assembly from 2002 to 2006, the same year he was first elected to the U.S. House.
McCarthy quickly rose through the ranks of the Republican Party, becoming the House Majority Leader in 2014. In 2019, he was elected Speaker of the House, making him the second-in-line to the presidency.
